Fabric Focus : Pichwai Fabric

For nearly 5,000 years, Indian craftsmen have used weaving, dyeing, painting, and printing to make beautiful textiles. One such traditional art is called Pichwai painting. The word "Pichwai" derives from "pich" (back) and "wai" (hanging), referring to the elaborate backdrop hangings created for Lord Krishna's temples, particularly in Nathdwara. These paintings originated in the 17th century when devotees of the Pushti Marg sect sought to honor Krishna in his Shrinathji form – depicted as a seven-year-old child with his left arm raised and right hand on hip.

Where Pichwai Started Pichwai art began in Nathdwara, a town in Rajasthan. It was first made by the Vaishnavas of the Vallabhacharya group to decorate temples. These paintings were hung behind the idol of Shrinathji, a form of Lord Krishna. The Jangad and Gauda communities in Nathdwara were the main artists. Some of these old paintings, made in the late 1500s, can still be seen in Nathdwara temples today.

What Pichwai Shows Pichwai paintings tell stories from the life of Lord Krishna. They show him as a child, playing with cows, dancing, or holding up the Govardhan hill.
